Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Remarks on Mexican President Calderón's Meeting with Dalai

2011-09-10

On September 9, despite China's repeated representations and firm opposition, the Mexican side arranged a meeting between President Calderón and Dalai, which gravely interferes in China's internal affairs, offends the Chinese people and impairs China-Mexico relations. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition in this regard. The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in Mexico have made solemn representations to the Mexican side in Beijing and Mexico City respectively.

Tibet-related issues are China's internal affairs. They concern China's core interests and are dear to the hearts of the Chinese people. Dalai has long engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the disguise of religion. China firmly opposes any foreign leader or government official meeting Dalai in whatever form. The Mexican leader's meeting with Dalai is a severe breach to the commitment repeatedly made by the Mexican side. We urge the Mexican side to take concrete steps to remove the bad impact and uphold the sound and stable development of China-Mexico relations.
